Most Vitamin C serums are formulated with synthetic Vitamin C (ascorbic acid). Ascorbic acid is a refined white powder that is water-soluble. Once exposed to oxygen and light, synthetic Vitamin C loses its cosmetic benefits. And as it’s water-soluble, it can only be added to a water-based formulation, which must then be made safe for use by adding a preservative system.
Retinol is a form of synthetic Vitamin A, and one of the best-known skincare ingredients on the market. Vitamin A helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles, enlarged pores, and give skin a renewed appearance. The problem with most synthetic Vitamin A serums (retinols), is that they usually cause sensitivities, skin irritation, and can accelerate sun damage if worn in daylight.
